  17. <p>    Come November, when the spotlight hits Tyne Daly in Gypsy,
  18. it will end her 22-year absence from Broadway. The winner of
  19. four Emmys for Cagney and Lacey will "join a line of worthy
  20. colleagues" as Mama Rose, the stage mother memorably played by
  21. Ethel Merman and Angela Lansbury. The powerhouse predecessors
  22. didn't scare her away: "Great parts are rare, and this is a
  23. great part in a great play." And can she sing? Says she: "It's
  24. nice to surprise the public."
